When the earliest American Indians lived in the beautiful "Hidden Valley," they found a lush environment with streams,
springs, lush oak trees, and abundant plants and animals. The valley area was an attractive place to live year around.
When the first Europeans settled in the area in the 1850's, they found a beautiful valley, studded with majestic oaks,
beautiful boulders and rich brushland. All in all, the climate and flora and fauna made el valle escondido, "The Hidden
Valley," a perfect place to raise crops and children.
As time went on a rich agricultural and residential community grew up in the Escondido Valley. The Escondido Citizens'
Ecology Committee spotlights Escondido's rich cultural heritage through our Historic District Walks, co-sponsored with the
Escondido Historical Society.
Escondido remains one of the nicest locations in the world to live and play. But as the area's population grows,
the pressures on its natural landscapes increases.
Established in 1971, the Escondido Citizens' Ecology Committee strives to preserve the quality of life and
the natural environment in the Escondido valley for all generations.
