The Guejito (pronounced Wah-Hee-Ta) Ranch is the last original Spanish land grant in California. The Guejito's 22,000
acres of pristine wildlands play host to thousands of species, dozens of endangered and protected species, and several endemic
plant species.
The ranches' value as a historic, wildlife and recreational area was recognized in 1971, when the State of California
performed a feasibility study to bring it into the State Park system. The study, including plans for visitor centers,
trails, campgrounds and true preservation, concluded that the area would become "the crown jewel of the California State Park
system." However, the sale was not completed.
Now, the family of the owner wants to annex the entire parcel into the City of Escondido for residential and commercial
development. Environmental groups across the country have made it clear: this one must be saved.
